Featherproof offers light and ‘enchanting’ reads...

Check it out... this is an article about my good old friend Zach Dodson who lives in Chicago. We were humanities majors together and got in lots of trouble. :)

Chicago’s literary scene works to fill the independent niche

Word to the wise: Shit is about to hit the fan. Bat shit, that is. Or at least that’s what Jonathan Messinger and Zach Dodson, the founders of Featherproof Books, are saying about their first published book, The Enchanters vs. Sprawlburg Springs, written by Columbia fiction writing teacher Brian Costello.

Describing the book as “bat shit-crazy,” Messinger and Dodson are pumped to release Costello’s debut book about “overnight hipster scenes, suburbia and tortured musicians who want to change the world,” which is set to be released Dec. 15.

But they say Enchanters is just the beginning for their indie publishing group, aimed at advancing local writers career’s while working towards the bigger goal of broadening Chicago’s independent literary scene.

“What’s best, I think, about Chicago is that people don’t think there’s a vibrant literary scene outside of New York and L.A.,” Messinger said. “I think that once people break out of that idea that you have to rely on these big corporations to make literature, these other scenes become more important and more vibrant. And I think that’s what happening with Chicago.”

Messinger, books editor at TimeOut Chicago, met Dodson when Dodson was working as a book designer, and they dreamt up an independent publishing company for writers such as themselves who didn’t want to try the large publishing house route.

“It started off as fantasy and then we started taking steps to make it happen,” Dodson said. “And it kinda happened by itself. And I guess as long as we keep taking those steps it’s gonna keep happening—or until we drop from exhaustion.”

Dodson is now the associate art director at Shelter magazine, and both men are working nonstop to help build press for Costello’s book. They are also working on their other project for Featherproof, the Light Reading series. The Light Reading series is an expanding group of short stories readers can download and print off Featherproof’s website and fold together to create a slim, easy read—perfect for long commutes on the el where space is limited and staring at the person across the aisle can only go on for so long.

For Messinger and Dodson, the Light Reading series is a helpful—and free—way to spread the work of authors who might not have a chance to turn out their work through mainstream publishers. It’s also a way to share their combined love of art and literature.

The faces of Featherproof: Zach Dodson and Jonathan Messinger. Left: Brian Costello’s book, in stores Dec. 15. Below: Messinger and Dodson toughen up.

“We really wanted to bring that physical aspect,” Dodson said. “And not just with the mini books, but with the novels too—each one will be designed in a special way. With the Internet, words can become cheap. There’s something special about a book and the paper and the smell.”

Messinger and Dodson base the business aspect of their publishing company off their influence from indie rock labels. From contracts to PR, they hope that maybe their company can help independent authors just like smaller labels have helped independent musicians over the years. Messinger likens their collection of Light Reading stories to a seven-inch record or a compilation of bands that music labels would put out on one CD—both writers and consumers of independent culture can catch a glimpse of what’s available to them.

“Those [smaller music] communities have had such success,” Messinger said. “It’s an always growing frustration for me—I feel like the literature being done in Chicago right now [and] the ideas being explored are more socially relevant and intriguing to me than anything done by any band. Not just in Chicago—anywhere, really. And so you have all these kids that will pay $15 or $10 to go to the Empty Bottle and see this band and see music, but they balk at paying $10 for a book or something like that, and so I think that what we’re trying to do is bridge that gap.”

Messinger believes that Columbia, along with other institutions, have had a lot to do with leading the way in Chicago’s literary scene. He credits several people involved with Columbia for promoting their love of literature: Costello; Todd Dills, who got his MFA at Columbia and has been running his own business, the 2ndHand, for about five years; and Joe Meno, a Columbia fiction writing teacher and author of Hairstyles of the Damned.

Featherproof wants to join in on the literary action with their promotions for Costello’s book at different music venues here and on the West Coast.

“Part of our deal is that we really believe in readings that aren’t just guys in tweed jackets reading into their books,” Messinger said. “It’s really fun to have bands and make it real so people can come out to it.”

Low Light

I've been testing the new camera in ambient darkness. It does very well with converting color temperatures. The tungston lights all look like they've been geled. Its wonderful. It will save me tons of time in photoshot. It is also amazing how it deals with reciprocity failure. The exposures are more acurate than they would be with the sekonic. just amazing.

Jerk Face Wilson

I photographed a private party for Anthony Nak tonight. The party was fun, but Luke Wilson was total JERK! One of the primary reasons I was hired to photograph the event was because they were expecting a celebrity appearance... When Luke arrived I let him get a beer and chat with some folks before I approached him. I was extra sweet and asked if I could just take a photo or two for Nak. He said NO! Not even a nice no. It was a pretty rude no. Anyways... I was left with only the option of hiding behind the bushes (house plants) to photograph him. Not fun!

- Post previously removed because of too many hits from the Wilson Fan club. -

Earmites

Poor Mr. Dexter has earmites! This is the second time. He doesn't seem to mind so much when I'm putting the drops in and q-tipping his ears, but he sure does pout up a storm afterwards. I can't help but laugh at him. He's just such a ham.

The Dump

Yesturday I went on a very odd date.

There is a game preserve at the texas disposal systems. it's pretty neat.

Assisting

I did some assisting for Michael O'Brien this weekend. The class was pretty interesting, but I already knew most of the stuff we went over. I'd say the most helpful things I learned were about the gel filters. I've been meaning to look into those and he did a nice job of teaching the class what the different ones do. They are really going to enhance my strobe work!

These numbers are visitors to bmy website www.marysledd.com.
It took me a moment to figure out why it fell off so sharply at the end of June. It's because I moved my blog from my website www.fancyblog.marysledd.com to here www.sledd.blogspot.com

I had NO idea that many people were looking at the site. I need to find a way to bring that traffic back.

Cindy Sheehan

Grandma asked me to go to the Cindy Sheehan "Bring them home now" protest because she is too old to be in the heat or to walk very far with out her wheel chair. Yesturday was her 86 birthday. Meaning she stole 16 years from someone else...

So being the good grandchind that I am I went to the protest. And being the good blogger that I am I took my camera... although more than once (i use a really big camera and take tons of gear) people asked me who I was shooting for and I would just tell them my blog (this is my favorite answer to this question. i often use it even when i'm shooting for big magazines). it usually is met with chuckles or confused looks.

Anyways. Not sure what i think about cindy. hopefully she'll do some good. i'm guessing she's going to write a book and go on some speaking tours when shes done. we'll see.

My Secret Brother

Went to a peace ralley last night and a familair voice said my name ... when i turned around my big brother ane he was GRINNING at me and telling me to take his pictures. Such an odd bird he is. We lived together for years before he moved in with his girlfriend. Glenn is by far the strangest and in some ways most tortured person i've ever met. But it was nice to see him. We didn't get along very well when we were kids. I was hopelessly nerdy and he was really preppy and cool. His friends tried a few times to get me to ditch the geek routine - stop wearing the glasses and polyester and become part of the in crowd, but i was too antisocial/awkward/tall/thin/goofy to pull it off. So if any of y'all were wondering what my brother looks like. ... here he is. Also of note this is about the 5th photo i've taken of him in my entire life.

Quitting the Day Job

This post is long overdue. As many of you already know I quit my day job at the nursery a month ago. I was only working 3 or 4 days a week, but it gave my life much needed structure. My mom has been hinting that I need to start doing my photo thing more seriously, and the nursery only really needs me for bookkeeping(2 hours on Sundays). So I did it. I left the job I've loved for 8 years to try and do my own thing.

This month has not been what I expected. I've had some big sucesses - the shoots for Lakewood, Arthouse and The Fall guys all went well. I now have seperate accounts for the company and myself. I purchased some awsome photo business software that has made me much more organized and I got the lens I've been wanting for ages.

Overall I'm pleased but there are some disappointments - I still don't have new business cards, a website, or any firm structure to my company. I only have one shoot booked for next week. I'm waiting on so many checks that I won't be able to pay off my credit card in full for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. Its not all that bad though cause it has 0% interest.

Before when I wanted something photo related I'd just buy it. Now I look at the nubmers and decide if it will help the company make money or if it is an unneeded expense. Very responsible.

I hope, with all that is in me, this company works. I've wanted to be a photographer since the 10th grade but was always too afraid to pursue it seriously because I thought failing would be worse than never trying. Mom convinced me that this is what i have to do! So hopefully it will work.

And if y'all know ANYONE who needs photo stuff in town PLEASE reccomend me. Its my main source of advertising and I really need to find more work if this is going to work.

On a side note - i've taken a two day job at a gaming convention photographing programmers with an inflatable gorilla. But it pays well so why not.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Yea Macs

Another little portrait from a shoot last week. The ad director for this shoot, Evan, is awsome. I just love this rug that he picked out. He also had a really helpful view book with samples of exactly what he wanted. If only everyone I work for could be so helpful.

I was trying to get this young lady, sarah, to kick her foot fast enough so there would be a motion blur, but my shutter speed was too fast.

Gotta love the 85mm 1.2 lens. Nothing could be clearer!!! If only it weren't just sitting on my credit card waiting for checks to come in I'd be a lot happier.

Recent Portrait

I liked this one.

assisting

i haven't assisted anyone in years!!! at least three but the other day cambria asked me if i'd help her with some light stuff so i did. shes only worked with ambient so i had to do all the heavy thinkign. she sent me some shots and i must say my lighting looks excellent .... and ok maybe she did a really good job too!

American Analog Set

This is a rough draft.

factory people

oh geepers. i keep forgetting to send people invoices. now that i have money in the bank i'm not so good at sending people statements the day after i do the work. factory people owes me at least $500 at this point and i've got a bunch of other people with similar and smaller jobs that I haven't billed yet. its just hard to want to work as hard when you have money in the bank.

getting ready

I'm going to photograph American Analog Set. A possible cover for the Austin Chrnoicle and a very likely candidate for Rollingstone sometime down the road. I'm nurvous. I'm having flashbacks to the DISASTEROUS shoot of Okkervil River done a few months ago with a similar theme.

Looks like it might rain. Not sure what I"m going to do if it does. This shot can't very well be done inside. Guess we could go to the nursery or something. Yikes.

The idea for the shoot is to surround the guys with equipment and then bound there hands with reel to reel tape. If we don't get rained on and not too much of the surrounding yard is visible it could look VERY cool. My new friend Cambria is going to help me with the lights. I should really pick up some sand bags on my way to the shoot. Wonder if I will have time.

the killers

i have poison ivy on my stomach, knee, leg, and neck.

photographed the killers tonight.

got another new lens. this one is for doing portraits in the dark. i'm amazed by how fast it is and by how acurate the color temperature is.

decided i'm going to put together and send a portfolio to rollingstone and spin. i've been looking at them and the photos are no better than mine. figure i have nothing to loose.

Cat Photos

Y'all will be happy to know i'm putting my photographic genius to work. I spent the evening photographing a couple of cats. They are lovely cats and no doubt the apple of thier owners eye, but my they were a pain to photograph!!! they didn't want to be still. i got this shot which is decent of one of the cats, although i don't think the owner will like it because she just loves the cats tail, which isn't in this photo. rrrg. but anywas. here it is. one cat portrait. that will be $200.

Abi's photo of Mary

Abi took this photo last week and I keep forgeting to put it online. it makes me look a bit naked, but i can think of worse things. my silly blog thing won't let me use the return key so i'm going to have another runnon entry with one long confusing paragraph. Got hired today to do another shoot for arthouse. i'm amazed how the jobs are just rolling in. I feel like I'm learning as I go.

Martini??

I'm in a bit of a bad mood. My photo shoot today didn't go as well as I had hoped.

The location was changed at the last minute from a very cool old bar to a music store. The music store recently expanded and has an ambiance that resembles a school cafateria at best. If that wasn't enough to deal with the piano (the subject of the photo) was supposed to be photographed with one person (I was thinking of doing something like corgliano's photo) but instead I had to photograph 7 people with the piano. And not good looking people mind you - geezers.

If all of this wasn't enough to deal with there were two other photographers shooting the same scene - one of whom had lights that were in the way at the very very least. I realise now I went about the photo all wrong. What I should have done was showcased the ugliness of the store and how the other photographers lights were in the way. A photo with him trying to get his photo could have been cool. oh well.
