Confession. I like to manually focus. I manually focus about 75% of the time and the other 25% I use a selected auto focus point. For kicks I'm going to spend a few days using the built in all zone auto focus setting on my camera. I'll report back on how it goes. So far I think it's pretty cool! I got out of the habit of auto focusing about 2 years ago, but it looks like the technology has improved. PS Isn't Disco cute?

Auto Focus

The predictive multi-point AF on the 1 series is pretty adept at picking out what the subject is. The 5D and 20D, however, are not quite as smart.
Luckily I'm working my FAVORITE camera the Id Mark III.
So, I guess you had a change of heart regarding the 1D Mk3?
Yes. Sort of. I used it yesterday at ACL (yes I know I said I wouldn't shoot the fest, but I got an offer I couldn't refuse). The Mark III focuses pretty well on auto focus for "news" type stuff. It also focuses pretty well in the dark.
